PUJI at Forest Holidays
The name ‘Puji’ is Indonesian and simply means to bless or admire. It's perfect, as they want you to stand back, admire your home and the beauty of their furniture.
Puji's vision is for their furniture designs to be pieces that withstand the test of time, age beautifully and fit in both modern and traditional homes while being eco-friendly and sustainably sourced. Puji specialise in reclaimed timbers like teak, pine and oak as they require no new trees making them an environmentally friendly option, and they also make use of mango trees that have passed their fruit bearing years.
They now manufacture both furniture and handcrafted accessories from all across Indonesia and its beautiful villages. Puji love the techniques that local Indonesians use and the final results are pieces that have been lovingly crafted and don’t negatively impact the environment. They are proud to have created a Puji community and our regular visits always lead to something new, which has helped the company to grow and stay exciting.
In the UK, Puji still maintain their ethical production and minimising their environmental impact is one of their core aims. They work hard to recycle as much packaging in the UK as possible and operate ‘positive recycling’ reusing as many boxes and wrappings as possible.
Puji are committed to being a responsible furniture retailer. The Puji company has always been inspired by the Far East and focuses on creating beautiful, high quality furniture and accessories from natural and recycled materials.
All exclusive wooden Puji products are handmade in Indonesia by local craftsmen. The Puji workshop is located in Java and with its exotic tropical surroundings; it is a great environment to work in.
The increase in popularity of Indonesian furniture has meant an improvement in lifestyle for many local people. Their manufacturing team are well looked after and earn above average wages for the industry. In addition to this they have worked hard to create a sense of community for every member of their team.
The wood used for much of their furniture is reclaimed, and therefore by definition eco-friendly. This old teak has been sourced through recognised Indonesian timber brokers who buy timber recovered from old colonial buildings.
Rapid expansion in Indonesia has seen substantial building work across the country and the old-style wooden buildings are being replaced with more sanitary and modern brick and tile housing. As a result, there is a supply of seasoned teak timber which not only has a rustic weathered appearance, but is very durable in the UK climate and is much less likely to shrink, move or crack. Each old ‘dinglik’ plank is stamped by the authorities as a proof of its source prior to being brought to the factory. On occasions Puji use premium grade, solid plantation teak sourced and kiln dried from government-controlled plantations on the backing of units and inner drawer panels.
Puji are constantly in touch with their manufacturers to ensure that the wood they work with is ecologically sound.
Ethical production and minimising environmental impact is one of the core aims at Puji, so they work hard to recycle large amounts of packaging and operate ‘positive recycling’, reusing as many boxes and wrappings as possible.
