Penningtons Tea & Coffee Ltd at Rothay Garden
The Pennington family has its roots in Kendal and the English Lake District, dating back to 1709. Penningtons is proud to be an independent, family-owned and family-run local business, boasting a team with over 50 years’ experience supplying beverages to the area’s hospitality industry. With their discerning customers in mind, Penningtons hand roast specially selected, ethically sourced coffee beans from around the world to craft the finest coffees.
The Lake District isn’t ideal coffee and tea growing country so we can’t avoid having to look overseas for green beans and teas. We can, however, make a difference where possible. Penningtons roast on gas as this produces the finest results. Gas also produces only one third of the greenhouse gases that other fossil fuel derived electricity does. Penningtons power is 100% from renewable sources.
The biggest challenge for coffee roasters and tea merchants is single-use plastic. The majority of bags and pouches used today are made up of multiple layers of plastics that make recycling impossible. Penningtons are introducing coffee and loose tea packaging made of a single recyclable material, accepted as part of house refuse collections. This means you can recycle all Penningtons bags! Penningtons even stopped printing the bags to prevent contamination during the recycling process.
Penningtons coffee pods are 100% compostable. The wrapper they come in is also compostable and the boxes fully recyclable.
Over 95% of the waste produced at their Roastery is recycled. Coffee bags have been made into cushions and others get a second life in local primary school sack races!
These changes make PENNINGTONS the most environmentally friendly coffee and tea merchant in the North West which is great for people and planet. There is more to do and Penningtons continually strive to reduce the impact of their business on the environment as it is the right thing to do.
